BOSTON, April 4 (UPI) — Two people died in Massachusetts when strong winds collapsed a tree that fell on top of a vehicle as wintry weather brought difficult driving conditions in the Northeast.
Police identified the couple as husband and wife Franklin Teixeira, 49, and Manuela Teixeira, 51, of the town of Whitman. Abington Fire Department officials arrived at the scene shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday to free the Teixeiras, who were transported to South Shore Hospital where they were pronounced dead. A son survives the couple.
Abington Fire Chief David Majenski called the incident “an absolute sad, sad tragedy,” CBS Boston reported.
A spring storm brought snow, gusty winds and cold temperatures to the Northeast. Winds were expected to subside Monday morning, but cold temperatures will continue. Rain and snow were expected to fall over portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Monday as a cold front passes through the region.
The National Weather Service predicted rain, freezing rain, snow and sleet could fall over parts of the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes on Tuesday, while warm and dry weather will continue for the southwestern United States.
“Snowfall accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are possible across southern New England,” the NWS forecasts for Monday. “The system will move offshore tonight, bringing an end to rain and snow along the East Coast.”
