NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) — ESPN reporter Stephen A. Smith suggested all African-Americans vote Republican in at least one election to prove no party can claim to have their demographic.

Smith said because African-Americans vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic party, they do not believe they have to address the issues that face black people in the United States while the Republicans believe it is a waste of time to try to turn the demographic.

“Black folks in America are telling one party, ‘We don’t give a damn about you.’ They’re telling the other party, ‘You’ve got our vote.’ Therefore, you have labeled yourself ‘disenfranchised’ because one party knows they’ve got you under their thumb. The other party knows they’ll never get you and nobody comes to address your interest,” he said.

Smith suggested they vote Republican to inspire the parties to “cater to them.”

“We don’t do that with politics,” he said, “and then we blame white America for our disenfranchisement.”

In 2012, 93 percent of African-Americans voted for President Barack Obama.
