ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 24 (UPI) — A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck south Alaska at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday near the Chigmit Mountains followed by two aftershocks within 30 minutes measuring in magnitudes of 4.0 and 3.2.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 79.4 miles about 52 miles east of the town of Old Iliamna and about 162 miles southwest of Anchorage
No injures were reported. The Homer Electric Association said nearly 4,800 of its customers lost power in the state’s Kenai Peninsula. The Alaska Department of Transportation reported road damage in Kasilof.
The earthquake “occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting at intermediate depths, within the subducted lithosphere of the Pacific plate,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
