MANHATTAN, October 31, 2017 (UPI & Gephardt Daily) — At least eight people have been killed and more than a dozen injured in an apparent terror attack in Lower Manhattan.

The attack took place Friday afternoon when a man behind the wheel of a rented Home Depot pickup truck drove onto a crowded bike path and mowed down bicyclists and joggers alike.

New York City Police said a lone officer shot the suspect after he crashed his vehicle into a school bus and exited with “imitation firearms.” The man reportedly got out of the truck with a paintball gun and a pellet gun.

The suspect — identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov of Tampa, Florida — was shot in the abdomen by a responding police officer. He was taken to a nearby hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said just after 4 p.m. on Twitter that he had been briefed on the incident and was traveling to the scene.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the attack Tuesday evening on Twitter.

“My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack,” Trump wrote. “God and your country are with you!”

The FBI announced it is investigating the incident as a terrorist incident.
