Dozens Arrested In Indianapolis Drug Sweep, Violent Gang Dismantled
INDIANAPOLIS, July 23 (UPI) — Dozens of gang members who ran an illegal drug market for years without repercussions were arrested Wednesday in a far-reaching police sweep through Indianapolis.
Some members of the Block Burners were so brazen they posted Instagram and Facebook photos with guns, drugs and stacks of cash. Investigators said they arrested 35 people on federal and state charges, 20 from the Block Burners gang, considered one of the most violent in the city. They also confiscated more than 20 guns and seized some $53,000 in suspected drug money.
All of this because police noticed those social media photos.
“The violence and criminal activity conducted by gangs like the one we busted today will not be tolerated. Just because you’re not here today in custody, doesn’t mean we don’t know who you are,” said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Rick Hite.
Officials said the gang distributed cocaine, heroin and marijuana by the pound, along with large quantities of prescription pain pills. Twelve Block Burners members face federal firearms and drug-trafficking charges.
The operation is among several that have been conducted in the Indianapolis area. In January 2014, 11 were arrested on federal drug charges and led investigators to crack the largest drug operation ever in the city worth some $4 million.
