ENSIGN PEAK, Utah, June 10, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters have stopped the forward progress of the Sandhurst2 Fire, the name given to a grass fire that spread in the Ensign Peak area early Wednesday afternoon.
The fire, believed to be human-caused, is estimated at 13-25 acres, and 50% contained, according to Utah Fire Info.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, Victory Road and Dorchester Road both remained closed to allow firefighters access, the UFI update said.
“Please avoid the area for firefighter safety. Homes were initially threatened, but evacuations were not mandatory, some voluntary evacuations.”
Salt Lake City Fire Department crews were dispatched at 1:16 p.m. to the fire, north of the Utah State Capitol. The call, reporting a vegetation fire, came from the area of 1135 N. Twickenham Drive.
“Crews arrived, and they did find that the fire was encroaching on some of the property up there, some of the homes,” said Cpt. Chad Jepperson, SLCFD, from the scene. “From what I’ve been told, we have not had a structure fire proper at this point. There’s probably some superficial damage.”

About 45 Salt Lake City firefighters were on scene, Jepperson said.
“We’ve also got some help from the state on this. They’re wildland crews. We can see we’ve got some helicopters in air and some planes that are dropping retardant helicopters are dropping water from a local source, and the retardant drops have been effective in slowing the fire down.
“The fire is coming out of the east, so the wind right now is coming out of the northeast, and it’s kind of pushing this fire downhill a little bit. So this is a good thing for the homes, because all the homes are on the east side, and so this, the fire on the east side is primarily out.” Crews next were focusing on the head of the fire, which was on the west side, Jepperson said.

“We did have one injury, a civilian injury that occurred. I don’t have any details on that, other than it was minor in severity.”
Jepperson some hikers were on scene, as was a trail runner. Crews responded to the area described by the trail runner, but the hikers were able to self-evacuate.
No area evacuation orders were given, Jepperson said. Some road closures are in place, to reserve needed space for fire trucks and apparatus.
