NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) — Port Authority police are trying to piece together exactly what they stumbled upon Tuesday after officers arrested three people and seized a cache of weapons at a major thoroughfare that connects New York City and New Jersey.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the arrests Tuesday morning. Officials said the suspects, two men and a woman, were stopped because of a cracked windshield on their vehicle. Suspecting drug use, police officers subsequently found the arsenal during a search of the truck.

During the stop, officers found long-range weapons, handguns and ballistic vests, and a camouflage helmet with night-vision goggles, New Jersey Online reportedTuesday.

At least one of the three suspects referred to themselves as “vigilantes,” news media reported, but it wasn’t immediately known what, if anything, the three were planning. Authorities reportedly said the three had no “nexus” to terrorism.

NBC New York described them as gun enthusiasts.

WNBC-TV also reported that all three are from Pennsylvania.

Drugs were reportedly found inside the vehicle and one of the three said they were on their way to assist a woman in Queens who was being held against her will. Authorities are checking that claim.
