Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island Evacuated Over Suspicious Package
NEW YORK, April 24 (UPI) — Visitors at theĀ Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island were evacuated Friday after police found a suspicious package in response to a phoned-in bomb threat.
The U.S. Park Police received the phone threat around 11:30 a.m., directing them to the package in a visitors’ locker, law enforcement officials told CNN.
A bomb-sniffing dog indicated something suspicious inside one of the lockers, though officials said it’s not uncommon for the dogs to react to a false positive.
The New York Police Department bomb squad was on hand to investigate, along with the NYPD harbor police and the National Park Service.
Tourists on the island were taken off the island by two waiting ferries. No one was injured.
