MOOSE, Wyo., Aug. 24 (UPI) — Two women mountain climbers have been killed after falling nearly 200 feet while attempting to climb Grand Teton National Park’s 12,300-foot high Teewinot Mountain in Wyoming.

Tyler Strandberg, 27, Catherine Nix, 28, and Rebecca Anderson, 26, were climbing the East Face of the Teewinot Mountain in attempts to reach the summit on Saturday. Anderson called 911 after she was no longer able to see Strandberg and Nix.

Anderson called out to the two other women but received no reply. Anderson was stuck on a small ledge as she waited for help. Park rangers arrived by helicopters and found Strandberg and Nix, who were unresponsive and declared dead on the scene.

Two rangers climbed “steep and technical terrain” for about an hour to rescue Anderson, who was not harmed.

“The climbers were well off the East Face route and in much more difficult technical terrain when the fall occurred,” the National Park Service said in a statement. “They were not using ropes at the time of the fall and were apparently trying to find the proper route.”
