PASCAGOULA, Miss., Feb. 2 (UPI) — A Mississippi Circuit Clerk’s office apologized to about 350 residents whose jury summonses contained an error sending them to a phone sex hotline.
Jackson County Circuit Clerk Randy Carney said he found out about the error on at least 350 jury summonses Sunday night when Circuit Judge Robert Krebs alerted him to the issue.
The summonses informed residents to call a phone number Monday to find out if they needed to show up for jury selection, but the erroneous number instead sent callers to a recorded message saying, “For hot girls, press 1. For hot guys, press 2.”
“Hopefully,” Carney told the Belleville News-Democrat, “no one did that.”
Carney said he and Circuit Judge Dale Harkey drafted an apology letter to be sent to those who received the summonses.
“Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the letter reads.
The clerk said the summonses are drafted by a company that contracts with the county. He said the company has been contracting for years prior to his taking office in January.
He said he is investigating the cause of the error.
“I have no idea at this point. I have not been able to talk to the individual that prints these for us,” Carney told WLBT-TV.
“It’s very embarrassing. I’m sure at some point down the road, I may sit back and laugh. Right now, I don’t think it’s very funny,” he said.
