The injuries Bono suffered in a New York City bicycling accident are more serious than his U2 bandmates, and late-night host Jimmy Fallon, previously claimed.

The 54-year old singer sustained a facial fracture on his eye socket as well as multiple fractures on his left shoulder blade, left arm and left hand.

Bono crashed in a “high energy bicycle accident when he attempted to avoid another rider” in Central Park on Sunday, according to a statement from New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Hospital For Special Surgery, first published in Rolling Stone.

Spokespeople at Interscope Records and the hospital confirmed the injuries.

The statement, written by orthopedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich, said Bono underwent multiple X-rays and CAT scans, which lead to multiple surgeries, the first of which lasted five hours. That surgery was for his “left compound distal humerus fracture where the bone of his humerus was driven though his skin and the bone was in six different pieces.”

“The elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws,” Lorich says.

Here is the full list of Bono’s injuries that the hospital emailed:

  • Left facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye.
  • Left scapula (shoulder blade) fracture in 3 separate pieces.
  • Left compound distal humerus fracture where the bone of his humerus was driven though his skin and the bone was in 6 different pieces. He was taken to the operating room for a 5-hour surgery Sunday evening, where his elbow was washed out and debrided; a nerve trapped in the break was moved; and the bone was repaired with 3 metal plates and 18 screws.
  • One day later, he had surgery on his left hand to repair a fracture of his 5th metacarpal.

Earlier this week after the accident, U2 was forced to cancel its week-long residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, on which Fallon only alerted the audience about Bono’s arm injury. Fallon then went on to impersonate Bono, going so far as to wear his wardrobe, with help from house band The Roots. Together, they performed U2’s 1987 song “Desire.”

Prior to Wednesday’s detailed list of injuries, Bono’s bandmates The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen issued a brief statement, telling fans about the Tonight Show cancellation.U2

“It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time — we’re one man down,” they wrote. “Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We’re sure he’ll make a full recovery soon, so we’ll be back!”
