WEST JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 19, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — An 18-year-old man is in custody after a carjacking in West Jordan Thursday afternoon.

The incident began just before 2:40 p.m. in the area of 7110 S. Executive Drive, Detective Nelson Vargas, West Jordan Police Department, told Gephardt Daily.

The victim told police she was in her driveway and was about to get in her car when a man approached her, brandished a handgun and demanded money. The victim told the suspect she didn’t have any money, whereupon he demanded her house keys.

The victim refused, and told him there were dogs in her home. The suspect began to walk away, then came back and jumped in the woman’s car, which had the keys in it and was running.

The suspect drove off, through the residential area, and down a dead-end street. He then left the vehicle running and fled on foot into surrounding fields.

Police arrived and set up a containment area. The suspect was found nearby, behind West Jordan Elementary School at 7220 S. 2370 West, and was taken into custody. Police recovered a firearm from the man.

The suspect, who has not been named, was booked into jail on charges of aggravated robbery, fleeing, and failing to stop at the command of a police officer, and is being interviewed by detectives.

Vargas said the woman was distraught but unhurt.
