SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 20, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say three members of a family had the scare of their lives Thursday night, when someone deliberately shot at them as they drove along Redwood Road.

Salt Lake City Police Lt. James Tracy said the shooting happened at about 900 N. Redwood Road when a male with a shotgun in another vehicle may have taken offense at something or blasted away in a case of mistaken identity.

Tracy said the victim either has a concealed-carry permit or had a handgun legally in his vehicle. He loaded the weapon and returned fire at the shooter, at which point the suspect took off and left the area.

The victims — a father, mother and teenager — drove around for a short while to make sure they weren’t being followed, then drove home and called police.

Tracy said the suspect with the shotgun was wearing a bandanna and was in a red Toyota. It isn’t known exactly how many were in the Toyota, but a car matching its description was located near an area known for gang activity.

Tracy said there were no injuries to the victims. It isn’t known if anyone in the Toyota was hit by gunfire.

“We’re still deep into the investigation,” Tracy said, “but we don’t believe there is any further danger to the public.”

He added that a lot of officers are working on this incident.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
