WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Oct. 17, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Smoke from a fire in a West Valley City RV salvage area closed a road Monday afternoon due to limited visibility.

West Valley City Battalion Chief Jed Peters said the department received a series of calls about a large plume of smoke in the area of 5600 West and 3100 South at approximately 12:15 p.m. Coincidentally, one of their crews was in the area training, so that crew responded initially and then was joined by more personnel.

Peters said the situation was made more dangerous because of the large potential for propane and gasoline in the area. Approximately 15 firefighters helped to fight the blaze, primarily using tower trucks, which have ladders. The blaze was brought under control in 25 minutes.

Peters said the manager of the facility lives on site and he was able to leave the area of the fire and also put a call in to fire crews to alert them to the situation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
