18-month-old dies after being hit by vehicle in Newton

NEWTON, Utah, June 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — An 18-month-old died Tuesday evening after being hit by a vehicle driven by a family member in Newton, officials said.

Officials responded to the incident that occurred in the area of 396 W. 300 South at approximately 6:30 p.m. and administered CPR on the toddler until paramedics arrived, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Initial reports indicate a family member was backing up a truck and ran over the toddler.

The child was transported to an area hospital, and passed away there.

“Our office is still investigating the incident,” the news release said “The investigation so far leads us to believe this is a tragic accident.”

The identity of the toddler has not been released pending notification of other family members.

Officials have not said whether the toddler was a boy or a girl.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this incident,” the news release said.

Newton is approximately nine miles west of Smithfield.
