May 31 (UPI) — Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify in the Senate, possibly next week, regarding the intelligence committee’s investigation of possible Russian electoral interference, unnamed sources said.
Sources close to the matter told NBC News and Politico Wednesday that Comey has been cleared to give testimony by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.
Comey, who was involved in a similar investigation into possible Russian meddling at the Justice Department, is expected to provide information to the intelligence committee — including conversations he had with President Donald Trump.
During his appearance in the Senate, Comey is expected to discuss his firing at the FBI by Trump, as well as a memorandum he wrote in which he said the president asked him to effectively shut down the Justice Department’s investigation.
NBC News reported that Comey had written memos for nearly every phone call or meeting he had with Trump.
Comey’s testimony had not been scheduled by Wednesday afternoon, but sources said it could happen next week. White House press secretary Sean Spicer directed media inquiries about the former FBI director’s appearance to Trump’s outside counsel.
Also Wednesday, the House intelligence panel approved subpoenas for former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Trump attorney Michael Cohen and several others.
“We approved subpoenas for several individuals for testimony, personal documents and business records,” Reps. Mike Conaway and Adam Schiff, the top committee Republican and Democrat overseeing the House investigation, said in a joint statement. “We will continue to pursue this investigation wherever the facts may lead.”
