William “Billy” Flynn, a Seabrook native, who in 1990, at the age of 16, shot Gregg Smart at the request of Pamela Smart, Gregg’s wife has been granted parole. He cannot be released any sooner than June 4, 2015

On Flynn’s 41st birthday he was told by the parole board that they have granted him his parole.

Flynn told the parole board “I will always feel terrible about what happened 25 years ago, Nothing I can say will be of comfort, but I hope this will be the last time Gregg Smart’s family will be publicly reminded of their grief.”

Flynn has done well while in prison and that was a helpful contribution to the parole boards decision to release Flynn sooner than his original sentence of 28 years. In the 25 years he has been incarcerated he earned a college degree and is a licensed journeyman electrician and also got married. Flynn has also participated in a work release program demonstrating his ability to return to society.

Dean Smart, Gregg’s brother, after reading a letter from his daughter, gave his own statement, asking Flynn that he leave New Hampshire for good, and that he do “something great” with his life after prison if released.

Flynn said he will never again live in New Hampshire and is planning on living in Maine. He also agreed to avoid the media at the request of Gregg Smart’s family members and the parole board.

Flynn was the sole shooter of the murder but was one of three involved. He had help by three of his friends, Vance “J.R.” Lattime, Jr. and Raymond Fowler who have since been released and co-defendant Patrick “Pete” Randall, who goes before the parole board on April 9.
