Armed Man Killed by Police in Roosevelt

ROOSEVELT, UT., MAY 4, 2015 (GEPHARDT DAILY) – An armed man, who was reported to be acting erratically near Uintah Basin Medical Center was shot and killed by a Roosevelt Police Officer.

On Sunday around 12:30 p.m., Roosevelt City Police officers and Duchesne County Sheriffs Deputies responded to a report of a man with a handgun. The man was pursued by officers to a nearby wooded creek area where Officers were able to make contact with the suspect. When Officers first encountered Mr. Norton they were able to confirm he was armed with a hand gun. After negotiations and less than lethal attempts to disarm him failed, he was shot by a Roosevelt Police Officer at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The suspect was then transported to Uintah Basin Medical Center within minutes of the shooting where he later died from his injuries. He has been identified as Kevin Vance Norton, age 36. He was currently on felony probation and prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Pursuant to Utah State Statute, the Roosevelt City Police Chief, Duchesne County Sheriff and the Duchesne County Attorney met and requested that the Utah State Bureau of Investigation investigate the officer involved critical incident.

The Uintah County Attorney, G Mark Thomas, has agreed to screen the case and determine if the use of deadly force was justified in this case.
