Three Dead in Shooting Near Baltimore’s University of Maryland
BALTIMORE, July 8 (UPI) — Three people died and one was injured after a shooting near the Baltimore campus of the University of Maryland Tuesday night.
Two vans pulled up to the side of a road and one person emerged from each van beforeĀ opening fire at a group of people on a street corner.
“A male and female were both transported to an area hospital where despite medical attempts, they succumbed to their injuries,” Detective Rashawn K. Strong of the Baltimore Police Department said in a statement. “The second male was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
There is no immediate indication that the victims were students at the campus, according to The Washington Post. The neighborhood is about half a mile west of the campus and is separated by a six lane road with a large median. The university has a yearly academic enrollment of more than 6,000 students.
The death of Freddie Gray, 25, resulting from injuries inflicted while under police custody sparked nationwide protests including some rioting in Baltimore, Md. The city saw a sharp increase in homicides following Gray’s death, but three deaths in a single incident is rare.
