UHP Says Zero Fatalities Lead to a Successful July 24 Weekend

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – July 27, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Utah Highway Patrol is calling this past holiday weekend a great success and attributes it to people wearing their seatbelts and not driving distracted.

Highway Patrol Troopers were still very busy this weekend however after working more than 400 shifts over the July 24 holiday weekend as well as participated in several parades and worked the Tooele Country Fan Fest.

In keeping our highways safe, troopers made 2,648 traffic stops, issued 1,717 speeding tickets, 65 distracted driving citations, arrested 41 DUI drivers and investigated 82 crashes.

The UHP believes that the wearing of seatbelts greatly minimized the seriousness of injuries in those crashes.

Troopers also assisted 543 motorists that were stranded and in need of help to get to their destinations.

“While this is one of the busiest travel holidays of the summer, our State Troopers were able to see a real reduction in serious crashes. We credit a lot of that reduction with the good choices that drivers are making by using seatbelts and not driving while distracted, said UHP Superintendent Danny Fuhr. “Our goal of zero fatalities is achievable as the motoring public works with law enforcement to do their part in staying safe.”

The Utah Highway Patrol is continuing to educate the public to wear a seatbelt, not drive while impaired, keep within the speed limit and keep distractions separate from driving.
