SACRAMENTO, Aug. 12 (UPI) — Rioting at California State Prison-Sacramento — commonly known as New Folsom Prison — left one prisoner dead and at least five others injured Wednesday, law enforcement officials said.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said about 70 prison inmates began fighting one another around 1 p.m. in the general population yards. Some of the inmates used weapons they created to stab an unknown number of prisoners.

At least five prisoners were hospitalized with stab wounds, officials said.

To break up the fight, guards used pepper spray and fired warning shots. None of the staff was injured in the incident.

Prison administrators said they were investigating the cause of the riot.

New Folsom Prison is located next to Folsom State Prison and houses about 2,300 inmates.
