ALPINE, Texas, Sept. 8 (UPI) — At least one person is dead and two other people, including a police officer, were injured in a shooting at a rural West Texas high school, local law enforcement said.

The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office said the dead person is believed to be the shooter from a self-inflicted wound. An Alpine High School student and an Alpine, Texas, police officer were injured in the incident. The school continued to be on lockdown past noon Thursday.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he is monitoring the situation.

“I have directed my office to offer any measure of support needed to assist the law enforcement officials currently working this case. I wish to extend prayers and sympathy to any victims’ families and their loved ones who have been affected by this senseless act of violence,” he said.

The high school is located in Alpine, a population 6,000 town located about 400 miles west of San Antonio.
