SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 2, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake Police responded to a middle school in Rose Park Friday afternoon on reports of a large fight between students.
The incident occurred at 1 p.m. outside Northwest Middle School, 1730 N. 1700 West. Salt Lake Police Department spokesman Detective Richard Chipping said a group of around 100 students congregated, but only a handful were actually fighting, and there were no injuries. Police arrived at the scene to disperse the students. Chipping said at one point there was a report that a student may have had a gun, but that turned out to be inaccurate.
Chipping added that the Salt Lake City School District will be taking care of the incident and it does not look like charges will be filed.
A 14-year-old Northwest student, who did not want to be named, told Gephardt Daily that approximately 10 students from Glendale Middle, which is at 1430 Andrew Ave., had come to their school to “start some shit” and “they started it and we ended it. They all ran away.”
“Glendale came to Northwest and they got their ass mopped,” the student added. “They’re Glendale and they don’t like Rose Park. ‘Cos we’re different… different hoods.” The student, and 8th grader, said the students from Glendale messaged the Northwest students on Facebook. “Right when they came they started running away,” he said.
Chipping said that in many cases where there are issues between students such as this, they will initially communicate via social media. “Usually that’s how it goes nowadays,” he said.
Today is the last day of school before summer for both schools, with Glendale finishing for the day at 1 p.m.
The two schools are approximately five miles apart.
The police didn’t do anything to break up the fight, the teachers did. All the police did was show up in their 12+ cars and stand around (as seen in the picture). The teachers and administrators were the ones who stepped it up and got the kids off campus. Give credit where credit is due.
