June 3 (UPI) — Protesters taking part in the March for Truth rally Saturday in across the United States called for an independent investigation into Russia’s alleged collusion with President Donald Trump‘s presidential campaign.
More than 1,000 people gathered at the Washington Monument for the demonstration, The Washington Post reported. Similar March for Truth rallies were held at about 130 locations across the United States and the globe, including Los Angeles, New York and London.
A smaller crowd gathered for a counter-protest called “Pittsburgh not Paris” in support of Trump outside the White House.
The name of the pro-Trump demonstration refers to remarks the president made Thursday when he announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement.
“I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” he said.
Fox News reported brief clashes between those involved in each protest.
Former speechwriter for President Barack Obama, Jon Lovett, took part in the March for Truth rally.
“We gotta keep up the fight, that’s all there is to it,” he said of the calls for an independent investigation.
“Eventually, you wake up with a knot in your gut about what the president might do or say,” he added. “We can take back the White House.”
There are three investigations into Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. election: one each by the House and Senate intelligence committees, and one by the FBI.
“We call for a #MarchForTruth on Saturday, June 3rd to raise our voices and let our elected leaders know that Americans want answers,” the March for Truth website reads. “The legitimacy of our democracy is more important than the interests of any party, or any president.”
Protesters also held signs decrying the country’s removal from the Paris agreement and Trump’s immigration policies.
