TOOELE COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A Montana man traveling at more than 180 mph while trying to break a speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats Tuesday lost control of his vehicle and crashed.
Driver Jerry K. Wortman was taken to the University of Utah Hospital in unknown condition. The accident happened at about 12:50 p.m.
“Jerry K. Wortman, 78, of Big Sky, Montana, was traveling in excess of 180 mph at the time of the incident,” said Pat McDowell, president of the Southern California Timing Association and director of the race.
“He was removed from his vehicle, and was stabilized and taken to the University Medical Center. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.”
McDowell said she did not know Wortman’s condition.
