SANDY, Utah, Jan. 28, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A commercial building housing rubber and plastic products went up in flames Sunday night, and investigators expected to be on scene for several hours as they work to determine the cause of the blaze.
Derek Maxfield, deputy fire chief for Sandy City Fire Department, said an automatic notification alarm was received at about 8 p.m. indicating a fire at a warehouse at 547 W. 9320 South.
As crews were en route, they saw a “heavy black column of smoke and called for a full assignment,” Maxfield said.
Finding the building fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, firefighters immediately called a second alarm.
The business, South Valley Specialty Products, makes rubber and plastic moldings and similar items. Maxfield said initial reports of possible explosions prompted fire crews to go into a defensive position immediately.
In fact, he said, they didn’t enter the building because it was too far involved when the first crew arrived and the owner of the business told officials that all employees had left earlier in the day and no one was inside.
Multiple agencies responded to the blaze, including Unified Fire Authority, and crews from Murray, West Jordan and Sandy fire departments.
There were no injuries in this fire.
Maxfield wasn’t able to estimate the cost of damages, but he said the building is a total loss.
