MILLCREEK, Utah, Jan. 17, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified two suspects in custody after officials say they carjacked an elderly couple after fleeing a hit-and-run accident involving a stolen car Thursday afternoon.
Justin R. Sheridan, 24, and Cory Webb, also 24, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail after being tracked down by police.
The incident began just after noon in the Murray/Holladay area, according to Unified Police Authority spokeswoman Lt. Melody Gray.
“We received a call of a hit, and it turns out that the vehicle involved in that hit and run was stolen out of Murray,” Gray said. “The suspects that were in that vehicle fled the scene, and then they carjacked an elderly couple. Both suspects were armed, and they threatened the lives of this elderly couple.”
The suspects got into the couple’s vehicle, ordered them to drive, then tried to hide from view, Gray said.
“Luckily for us, one of our officers did spot these people in the car — they popped their heads up. We were able to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. The suspects again fled on foot, and chase was given.”
Three schools — Crestview Elementary, Wasatch Waldorf Charter School and Olympus Junior High — were placed on lockdown briefly, as a precaution.
One male was apprehended quickly in the area of 1660 E. Murray Holladay Road. He was combative while being taken into custody, Gray said.
“He was armed and had a gun on him, and was taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers,” she said, adding that the firearm was not fired, but was used in threatening the carjacked couple.
The second suspect was taken into custody a short time later.
“There is a weapon outstanding, so we have K-9 in the area and officers searching for that weapon,” Gray said.
One suspect was sedated due to his behavior, she added.
The elderly couple was not injured.
“They are physically fine,” Gray said. “They are a little bit shaken up. It was quite a frightening experience for them to go through.”
Gephardt Daily will have more information as it becomes available.
Wasatch Waldorf was also put on lockdown.
