Utah COVID-19 update: 1,488 new cases in past day; 12 deaths in past 2 days

UTAH, Aug. 18, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Department of Health on Wednesday reported 1,488 newly documented cases of COVID-19, as well as 12 deaths in the past two days.

“Due to a complication with the fatality data file transfer, new deaths from today will be reported tomorrow,” UDoH said in a statement Tuesday.

Cases now number a cumulative 449,259. Documented coronavirus deaths as of yesterday stood at 2,549.

Those that died were:

  • A male, between 65-84, Davis County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A male, between 25-44, Davis County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A female, between 65-84, Weber County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A female, between 65-84, Salt Lake County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A male, between 65-84, Box Elder County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A female, older than 85, Box Elder County resident, not hospitalized
  • 2 males, between 45-64, Salt Lake County residents, hospitalized at time of death
  • A female, between 65-84, Salt Lake County resident, long-term care facility resident
  • A female, older than 85, Iron County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A male, between 65-84, Salt Lake County resident, hospitalized at time of death
  • A male, between 65-84, Emery County resident, unknown if hospitalized

UDoH reports 3,157,148 vaccines administered, which is 11,271 more than Tuesday.

In the last 28 days, people who are unvaccinated are at 5.4 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 6.3 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 4.9 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, UDoH said.

Since Feb. 1, 2021, people who are unvaccinated are at 8.1 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 5.8 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 5.5 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people.

People tested for COVID-19 number 3,035,821, an increase of 8,890 people tested since Tuesday.

Tests given total 5,511,801, an increase of 15,758 tests since Tuesday.

The rolling seven-day average for positive tests is 1,004 per day.

The rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “people over people” is 13.6%. The rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “tests over tests” is 9.7%.

There are 398 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19. Total hospitalizations from the beginning of the outbreak are 19,489.
