TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Oct. 10, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man allegedly driving a stolen car was shot and killed by a Taylorsville police officer Wednesday night.
Taylorsville Police Lt. Aaron Cheshire told Gephardt Daily officers located the stolen vehicle about 10:15 p.m. and followed it to the area of 3900 South and 300 West, where they made contact with two occupants in a business parking lot.
“During the contact, shots were fired by the police and there is one male who is deceased,” Cheshire said.
While limited information is available at this early stage of the investigation, which is now in the hands of the Unified Police Department’s Officer Involved Critical Incident Team, Cheshire confirmed the suspect vehicle had fled from another local police agency earlier in the day, and the Department of Public Safety’s Star 9 helicopter was in the air following the car Wednesday night.
Cheshire stressed the vehicle didn’t flee from Taylorsville PD.
“We did not chase the vehicle,” Cheshire said, and there was no contact with the male driver, or his female passenger, until “he got into a parking lot.”
Only one Taylorsville officer fired their weapon, Cheshire said. That officer has been placed on administrative leave, as per department policy.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
It was unclear if the female passenger is facing charges, Cheshire said.
