SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 8, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was taken into custody and officers had begun to clear the scene at 12:34 p.m. Sunday, minutes after Salt Lake City police posted a message about a man named Lovell Grant being sought by police in connection with a report of gunfire Sunday morning.
“We are looking for Lovell Grant, 5 feet 7 inches, 300 pounds,” said a social media post issued by the SLCPD at 12:16 p.m. “He is wanted for aggravated assault. Last seen leaving on foot the area of 600 S. 540 E. Considered armed and dangerous, DO NOT APPROACH.”
Grant was described as wearing green shorts with a yellow stripe down the side, and white tennis shoes. The man taken into custody at about 12:30 p.m. was dressed in that fashion.
Salt Lake City police and officers from other agencies had responded to the Central City area of 564 E. 600 South at 9:15 a.m. Sunday on a police call described on the SLCPD log as a shooting.
SWAT officers were called to the scene. Armored vehicles arrived, and a Department of Public Safety helicopter hovered overhead.
After Grant, whose name was confirmed by SLCPD Sgt. Greg Wilking, was taken in custody at about 12:35 p.m., Wilking spoke with reporters on the scene.

“Today, we had a domestic assault investigation where the suspect fled from that assault, we set up containment in the area, and fortunately, we were able to locate him just a couple minutes ago,” Wilking said. “He was still in the area…. It took us some time to find him.”
Wilking said Grant lives with the person who was injured, who had been transported to an area hospital with injuries of a nature Wilking said he did not know. Grant was also transported to a hospital with injuries, Wilking said, and will be booked into jail once he has been cleared.
Asked why the police response was so large, Wilking said the circumstances were considered “a very high risk with this individual, so that’s what precipitated this response.”
“He was considered armed and dangerous, and so we wanted to lock down the scene. We also weren’t 100% sure if he was still located inside the residence when we first arrived on scene, so we weren’t sure if we had a barricaded subject inside at that point, we had our SWAT team come out and try to make contact.
“Once we cleared that residence, we realized that he was not in that residence any longer, we brought in more resources such as the K-9s.”
Grant was located a few apartment units away from the assault site, Wilking said. He added that Grant had just recently moved to the city.
Asked what kind of weapon was used, Wilking said he did not have that information, but believed a couple varieties of weapons had been used in the assault.
Gephardt Daily will have additional information as it can be confirmed.
