Here’s a patented winning streak: IBM has maintained the No. 1 spot among U.S. patent recipients for 22 straight years.

The company announced that in 2014 it received 7,534 patents, making it the first company to earn more than 7,000 patents in a single year.

“IBM’s continued investment in research and development is key to driving the transformation of our company, as we look to capture the emerging opportunities represented by cloud, big data and analytics, security, social and mobile,” IBM CEO Ginni Rometty said in a statement. “IBM’s patent leadership over more than two decades demonstrates our enduring commitment to the kind of fundamental R&D that can solve the most daunting challenges facing our clients and the world.”

A few examples of the patents awarded: enabling service virtualization in a cloud; interactive analytics processing; mobile device validation; assessing social risk due to exposure from linked contacts; identifying whether an application is malicious; and natural language processing.

More than 8,500 IBM employees in 46 states and territories and 43 countries contributed to the patent total, while those outside the U.S. contributed to more than 34% of the patents.
