21 Weird Things Dropping On New Year’s Eve

The New Year’s Eve ball in Times Square isn’t the only thing dropping on New Year’s Eve this year. Here’s a look at the unique way many states are ringing in the New Year in 2015.

Brasstown, N.C. : For 20 years a live possum has been lowered in a box from a pole outside of a convenience store. But this year either road kill or possum stew will be dropped after challenges from animal rights activists.

Port Clinton, Ohio : The city will drop a 20 foot, 600 pound fiberglass walleye fish.

Presque Isle, Maine : The annual Sardine and Maple Leaf Drop features a giant sardine dropped in honor of the city’s historic sardine fishing and canning past.

Tuscon, Ariz. : Who needs to drop a large disco ball? What about a taco! This year a 15-foot taco will be dropped to reign in the New Year at the Hotel Congress NYE Block Party in Tuscon.

Atlanta, Ga. : Each year an 800-pound peach is dropped in Atlanta to bring in the New Year. In 2013, a giant M&M was dropped alongside the peach.

Raleigh, N.C. : A huge acorn is lowered down a pole to issue in the New Year.

Plymouth, Wis. : An 80-pound decorated wedge of cheese will descend from 100-foot ladder truck.

Flagstaff, Ariz. : A 6 ft. 70 lb. lighted pine-cone will be lowered from the Weatherford Hotel.

New Orleans, La. : The French Quarter will lower a Fleur de Lis to ring in the New Year.

Mobile, Ala. :A huge Moon Pie will be lowered from a building in downtown Mobile, Ala.

Key West, Fla. : A giant conch shell will be dropped at a popular bar.

Whitman, Mass. : A replica of a Toll House cookie will be dropped for the first time this year in downtown Whitman, Mass. The cookie was invented in the 1930 by Toll House Restaurant owner Ruth Wakefield.

Kennett Square, Pa. : An 8 ft., 500-pound sparkling lit mushroom will drop in what’s known as the “Mushroom Capital of the World.”

Bethlehem, Pa. : A fiberglass Peep will be dropped from a crane.

Lewistown, Pa. : A six-by-nine-foot, 200-pound of Hartley’s Potato Chip bag will drop. Chips have been a big part of the area since 1935.

Indianapolis, Ind. : For the first time, an IndyCar will be dropped to ring in the New Year. IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter will be the guest of honor at the event.

Vincennes, Ind. : An 18 ft., 500-pound watermelon will drop as it is celebrated to usher in the excitement as people get ready to enjoy summer in the months ahead of the New Year.

Boise, Idaho : Get ready for the return of the Idaho Potato Drop! It’s a spud-tacular event!

Las Cruces, N.M. : 15-foot Chile Drop includes 400 feet of LED Lights. This year will mark its first year to drop. There will be a debate about whether the chile should be red or green.

Temecula, Calif. : A 250-pound cluster of giant grapes will be dropped from the Temecula City Hall Bell Tower. It has more than 4,500 LED lights.

Mount Olive, N.C. : A 3 ft. pickle will be lowered from a 45 ft. flagpole in downtown Mount Olive, N.C.
