‘Breaking Up Is Hard to Do’ singer Neil Sedaka dies at 86

Feb. 27, 2026 (UPI) — Singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka died Friday at age 86. The Hollywood ReporterPeople and Rolling Stone confirmed via a statement from Sedaka’s representatives.

The family called Sedaka’s death “a sudden loss,” adding he was “a true rock and roll legend, and inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed.”

Sedaka was active on TikTok as recently as Tuesday. His family posted the statement to his TikTok account.

People confirmed TMZ‘s initial report that Sedaka was taken to the hospital by ambulance Friday. No further information was provided.

Sedaka’s own hits include “Calendar Girl” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” He wrote “Love Will Keep Us Together” for The Captain & Tenille and “Stupid Cupid” for Connie Francis.

Later hits included “Laughter in the Rain” and “Bad Blood.” Sedaka worked with lyricists Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody.
