TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Feb. 27, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — An alleged gunman was shot and wounded by an off-duty Utah Highway Patrol trooper Thursday in the midst of an active shooter incident at a Taylorsville liquor store.

Taylorsville Police Lt. Aaron Cheshire told members of the media that emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 2:17 p.m., reporting an “active shooter” at the store near 4400 South and 2700 West. The caller, who was in the parking lot, reported seeing a man running into the store while firing a weapon at another man.

Taylorsville police officers arrived within one minute of the call, along with officers from the West Valley City Police Department. Once on scene, they found two injured men inside the store, one of whom had been shot by the alleged assailant, the other by the trooper, who was in the store on private business, according to a statement by the Department of Public Safety.

“During the incident, a suspect discharged a firearm and injured one individual. The trooper returned fire, securing the scene and preventing further injuries.

“We are grateful for the trooper’s swift actions,” the DPS statement said.

The initial shooting victim and the suspected gunman were transported to a hospital and were reported to be in stable condition Thursday afternoon, Cheshire said.

The off-duty trooper was uninjured.

It is too early to determine what led to the shooting, whether the men knew each other, or how many shots were fired, according to Cheshire.

The Salt Lake County OICI Protocol Team 1 is currently investigating the matter, the DPS said. “As this is an active investigation, no further statements will be provided.”
