Cast Photo of “Suicide Squad” Gets Tweeted
Variety shared a tweet from director David Ayer (“End of Watch,” Sabotage” and “Fury”) where he revealed his first cast photo for the upcoming Warner Bros. film “Suicide Squad.”
The cast for the new action film includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney. The photo shows the cast at a table read prior to shooting. which begins next week.
The one notable absence in the photo is Academy Award Winner Jared Leto, who has been given the daunting task of stepping into Heath Ledger’s shoes as the newest incarnation of the Joker. Leto was absent from the reading because he was on tour with his band, “30 Seconds to Mars.”
“Suicide Squad” is a sort of comic book take on “The Dirty Dozen.” Based on a popular DC title, the story centers on the team of supervillains turned into an elite commando unit. The Suicide Squad is given a chance at redemption, with the one major caveat being evident in the name of their unit: they are chosen because they are not expected to survive the mission.
The Suicide Squad figures prominently on the CW’s “Arrow” television series, but Marvel Studios is taking the gamble that mass audiences will be more interested in seeing Will Smith as Deadshot than Michael Rowe (who is currently bringing the boat ashore.). Not to take away from Rowe’s performance as “Air Force #1” in “Godzilla,” but Smith has a slightly higher recognition factor.
With additional characters like The Joker, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), the movie promises to take the Squad in a whole new direction.
“Suicide Squad,” produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, hits theaters Aug. 5, 2016.
