DVD and Blu-ray Reviews: “The Gambler,” “Inherent Vice” and “Paddington”

thegambler“The Gambler”

Mark Wahlberg stars as an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, who bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral.

A decent thriller but needing a more powerful ending, “The Gambler” never really has the guts to lay it all on the line. The film seems to hesitate and finally becomes overly predictable and pedestrian.

The Gambler gets a C and is rated R.

“Inherent Vice”

inherent viceJoaquin Phoenix stars with a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, “Inherent Vice” is almost too over-the-top.

But that’s also the only alluring thing about this film; it’s really kind of kinky. But for the majority of moviegoers, I think this will fall way short. On DVD it gets a C- and is rated R.

“Paddington”

A bear travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven.

“Paddington” turns out to be a wonderful, warm family film. The CGI blends nicely and paddingtonthe acting is well done.

This film will keep you and the kids entertained. It gets a B on Blu-ray and DVD. “Paddington” is rated PG.
