LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 (UPI) — “Boy Meets World” sequel series “Girl Meets World” has been canceled by Disney after three seasons.

“It is with incredible pride in our work and complete sadness that things end, that I report to this wonderful audience that our show is over,” noted the Twitter account of the “Girl Meets World” writers.

“I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes,” they continued, referencing the remaining three installments of Season 3 that will come to a close with a finale titled “Girl Meets Goodbye” which will air Jan. 20 on the Disney channel.

“We leave you with three incredible souvenirs of a show we couldn’t be more proud of. As I look back I can tell you with absolute certainty – we gave you our best.”

Disney Channel also confirmed the cancellation in a statement to “Entertainment Tonight“:

“We are proud that for over 70 episodes, Michael Jacobs, April Kelly and the talented creative team, cast and crew entertained viewers with an authentic and heartfelt look at navigating adolescence.”

News of the cancellation comes after star Rider Strong, who plays Cory’s best friend Shawn Hunter, suggested on his podcast “Literary Disco” in December that the cast had finished filming for the show.

“We finished the third season of ‘Girl Meets World,’ he said at the time. “My brother and I were directing a lot of episodes and I acted in a couple. And the show ended.”

“Girl Meets World” is a spinoff series to “Boy Meets World” which ran for seven seasons on ABC from 1993 to 2000. The sitcom follows Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard), the daughter of Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) and Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel) along with her best friend Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter.)
