SAN DIEGO, July 23 (UPI) — The classic indie horror movie The Blair Witch Project is getting a second sequel.
“THE WOODS is actually Lionsgate’s secret BLAIR WITCH sequel!” the film’s Twitter account said Saturday. “In theaters 9/16.”
The post included a 2-minute trailer for the contemporary film featuring a group of young adults heading into a reputedly haunted section of forest in an effort to find one of the member’s long-lost sibling. The follow-up was directed by Adam Wingard.
1999’s Blair Witch Project — co-written and directed by Daniel Myrick — was a fictional movie billed as found footage of a trio of student filmmakers who disappeared in Maryland’s Black Hills while trying to shoot a documentary about a creepy local legend. It starred Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard. The sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 terrorized different characters in 2000, but wasn’t nearly as successful as its blockbuster predecessor.
James Allen McCune will play the brother of Donahue’s character in the third film, which was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con.
