HOLLYWOOD, June 2 (UPI) — The official teaser trailer for Pixar’s upcoming film The Good Dinosaur has been released, and it’s posing a very thought-provoking question: What if everything was different?

What if the huge 6-mile-wide astroid that wiped out all dinosaurs millions of years ago missed the planet entirely?

In the imaginative manner which Disney and Pixar produces their films, The Good Dinosaur follows a story about a youthful dino — an Apatosaurus named Arlo — as he tries to find his way back home after being mistakenly separated. He meets a quiet cave-kid whom he names Spot and they embark on the adventure together.

The timeline of the film is obviously warped in comparison to real-life events, but that’s what director Pete Sohn was going for. There is no exact era presented as part of the setting, but it is at a fictional point in time when humans and dinos interacted side-by-side.

“It’s kind of an unknown, and it’s been fun to let go of what has happened. It’s given us some space in terms of the logic of the rules,” he told Yahoo Movies — which released the trailer exclusively — in an interview Monday.

“Arlo himself is what we would have become, able to articulate and have certain emotions and connection to family,” he said. As for the boy, he’s more of a pet to Arlo — kind of like a the classic tropes of the boy and his dog — except the boy is the dog, and the dino is the boy.

“I’m trying to treat Spot in a very kind of animalistic way, where he doesn’t speak very much. He’s very feral,” Sohn said. “The heart of it has always remained the same in terms of the boy and the dog.”

The trailer for The Good Dinosaur is out now, the film hits theaters Nov. 25, 2015.
