“Hotel Transylvania 2”
Starring: Adam Sandler and Kevin James
Directed by: Genndy Tartakovsky
Rated PG
Dracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in his half human, half vampire grandson in order to keep Mavis from leaving the hotel.
“Hotel Transylvania 2” is a fun family flick that lays on the one-liners and gags as thick as peanut butter in an effort to keep everything moving. The animated film is as zany as it heartwarming as Dracula, now a grandpa or (as they say in the film) “Vampa,” is dealing with the idea of daughter Mavis leaving the family home and heading to California because she thinks the hotel is no safe for her baby.
Although the jokes are almost non-stop, there is a real sweetness to the movie that makes “Hotel Transylvania 2” worthwhile to see.
It gets a B and is rated PG.
“The Intern”
Starring: Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway
Directed by: Nancy Meyers
Seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Feeling alone and useless, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway.
In this “generation-gap” comedy De Niro is a fish out of water in the modern business world of emails, texting and the cloud. His co-workers, who are in their mid-twenties, are suffering from lack of inspiration. As Ben sees it, they are confused and need some sound advice. Which he offers them.
And therein lies the comedy and the appeal of the film, as Ben begins mentoring his co-workers in their personal lives, he begins to feel appreciated.
The Intern does offer a few good moments and there is a platonic playfulness between De Niro and Hathaway, which endears the film even more.
The Intern” gets a B and is rated PG-13.
