ATLANTA, Jan. 22 (UPI) — Federal health officials have traced an outbreak of Listeriosis to a salad product packaged and distributed by Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc., the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.
The outbreak has so far sickened 12 people and killed a person in Michigan, the CDC said in an update to the case Friday.
The agency, which said the outbreak was traced to a Dole plant in Springfield, Ohio, has been working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to identify the source of the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria since September.
All the outbreak cases were reported after July 5, 2015, the CDC said.
Dole announced Friday that it had shuttered operations at the Springfield facility and recalled all the tainted salad packaged at the plant.
“Products subject to the voluntary withdrawal are identified with a product code beginning with the letter ‘A’ in the upper right-hand corner of the package,” the food company said. “Retailers and consumers who have any remaining product with an ‘A’ code should not consume it, and are urged to discard it.”
Dole said the voluntary recall affects salad products shipped from the Ohio plant to numerous states.
