MURRAY, Utah, Nov. 20, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two students were transported to an area hospital on Tuesday after being burned by a pressure cooker at a charter school in Murray.

Murray Fire Department said in a tweet the incident occurred at the AMES, the Academy for Math, Engineering and Science, a charter school that rents space at Cottonwood High School’s campus at 5715 S. 1300 East.

Officials said the two students were in a cooking class when they released the lid from a pressure cooker that had water inside.

Both students suffered minor burns, officials said. One student was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and the other was taken by a parent.

According to the website Pressurecookerportal.com, if you have difficulty opening a pressure cooker, the following tips may help:

  • Pour some cold water on the lid to release excessive pressure, or
  • If the lid remains jammed, remove the pressure valve and allow the pressure cooker to heat on high. That will release the pressure, and the lid will loosen its grip.
