80-year-old man killed in Provo auto-pedestrian crash; driver arrested for alleged DUI, automobile homicide, police say

PROVO, Utah, Dec. 15, 2025 ( Gephardt Daily) — A Provo man was killed Monday night after he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the road near 920 South 100 West, according to a news release from the Provo Police Department.

Officers responded to the crash at about 6:10 p.m.

The victim, identified as Mario Valer, 80, was taken to Utah Valley Hospital in critical condition and later died, the release states.

Police said the driver, Jason Phillips, 42, of Pleasant Grove, was arrested and taken to the Utah County Jail, where police said he will be booked on DUI, Class B misdemeanor and automobile homicide, a second-degree felony.

The case remains under investigation, police said.
