WEST VALLEY CITY – June 10, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A man who was shot and wounded Wednesday afternoon in the aftermath of an argument which started on a crowded UTA bus has died.

Police are identifying the victim as 22-year-old West Valley resident Marco Cardenas.

His teenage assailant is behind bars and now faces a prospective homicide charge.

According to investigators, the shooting took place near 5600 W. 3500 South after a fight broke out over gang affiliations.

Witnesses told police both men exited the bus and began fighting outside a Burger King when the teen suddenly pulled a gun and shot Cardenas at close range. Police say several shots may have been fired.

Paramedics called to the scene worked feverishly to save Cardenas’ life. He was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where died a short while later.

Police captured the suspected shooter after he was seen running in a field behind a nearby mall. He was chased into an adjacent neighborhood where he was ultimately taken into custody

The alleged gunman’s name has yet to be released.
