UTAH COUNTY, Utah, July 26, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A large debris flow early Friday night has closed U.S. Highway 89 from mile marker 309 to mile marker 306.

The highway is impassable and multiple agencies are on scene. A flash flood warning is in effect for the area.

Utah Highway Patrol tweeted: “Flash flood and large debris/mud field on US 89 from MM 309 to MM 306. Roadway is closed in both directions with over 2 feet of rock and mud covering it in spots. Water is still flowing over parts. Unknown if people are/were caught in the flow. Search crews are just arriving.”

A few minutes later, Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon told Gephardt Daily the flow, from about the Thistle turnoff at mile marker 312 to mile marker 309, in the Birdseye area, is substantial.

“As far as we know, there haven’t been any injuries. Search and Rescue is down there now, helping UHP get people out of the mud,” Cannon said.

He said U.S. 89 is completely impassable and described the flow as “possibly a couple feet of mud and debris for an extensive section of the road.”

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information is made available.
