WASATCH COUNTY, Utah, May 28, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A husband and wife were traveling westbound on state Route 35 near milepost 18 on separate motorcycles Sunday afternoon, when the woman crashed head on into a 2016 Dodge truck and was killed.

The woman has been identified as Claire Benson, 47, of Pleasant Grove.

According to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol, Benson failed to negotiate a turn to the right and crossed over into the oncoming travel lane. She was wearing a helmet and protective gear but died on impact. The motorcycle, a 2012 Ducati, burst into flames.

The driver of the Dodge truck had minor injuries from airbag deployment, but was not transported.

UHP said the crash occurred at approximately 3:58 p.m., and the roadway was shut down in both directions for about an hour before one lane could be intermittently opened for both travel directions. Milepost 18 is 14 miles east of Woodland. Woodland is about 6 miles south of Kamas.

Excessive speed is being investigated as the contributing factor to the crash.
