SANDY, Utah, Aug. 16, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews battled a field fire in Sandy Thursday morning that was threatening three homes in the vicinity, officials said.

Matt Stuebner, Battalion Chief with Sandy Fire Department, told Gephardt Daily crews were dispatched to the fire in the area of 940 Violet Drive (10100 South) around 11:30 a.m. A witness to the fire told Gephardt Daily the flames were between 30 and 50 feet high.

“On arrival, we found that the field fire was approximately half an acre, but there was heavy sage brush and ladder fuels, where the grass goes into the tall trees,” Stuebner said.

“Basically there was a passerby who noticed there was a large column of smoke coming from the rear of the structure and found that the fire was spreading quickly so he got out and warned the homeowners.”

Stuebner said three homes were threatened and the field fire burned up to the property line. He added some pine trees on the homeowner’s properties did catch fire but crews were able to extinguish the flames rapidly. No outbuildings or sheds were affected.

“The fire crews that first arrived did a fast offensive attack, we were able to get a good quick water supply and get the fire out so for the most part it was a quick response,” Stuebner said.

There were no injuries to firefighters or homeowners.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Stuebner said. “Due to the time of year and location it is suspicious but we just don’t know,” he added.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
