This Todd Snider photo was shared on his Facebook page. Snider died Friday at age 59.

HENDERSON, Tenn., Nov. 15, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Nashville alt-country folk singer Todd Snider died Friday. He was 59.

The cause of death was not immediately available, but Snider recently had been diagnosed with walking pneumonia, according to a report on his Facebook page.

“Aimless, Inc. Headquarters is heartbroken to share that our Founder, our Folk Hero, our Poet of the World, our Vice President of the Abrupt Change Dept., the Storyteller, our beloved Todd Daniel Snider has departed this world,” his company posted on its website.

“Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right words, who knew how to distill everything down to its essence with words and song while delivering the most devastating, hilarious, and impactful turn of phrases? Always creating rhyme and meter that immediately felt like an old friend or a favorite blanket. Someone who could almost always find the humor in this crazy ride on Planet Earth.”

Salt Lake City incident

Oregon-born Snider was known for his sardonic wit, social insights, stoner vibe and biting musical ballads penned over a career spanning more than 40 years. His songs also included elements of rock, the blues and funk.

Snider made headlines early this month when he was in Utah for a scheduled Nov. 1 concert at the Commonwealth Room, a South Salt Lake venue, when he was allegedly assaulted outside his hotel room.

Snider was treated at a Salt Lake City hospital, but there was an altercation when he was told to leave, but did not want to, according to an arrest document filed by Salt Lake City Police officials.

Snider “did not believe they should (have) been discharged, and started yelling/cursing at the staff,” his arrest document says.

“This caused public inconvenience and alarm among hospital employees and residents by making unreasonable noise by shouting. A medical professional from the hospital then told the (Snider) to leave the property and not return.”

Snider “left, but then returned to the property after being told not to come back. They then made verbal threats to the victim by getting into the face of the victim and stating they were going to ‘kick your ass.'”

Snider was arrested on Nov. 2 for investigation of issues including disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and the threat of violence.

Snider never made it to his Commonwealth Room gig. Aimless, Inc., citing the alleged violent attack and injury, published a statement the next day saying his upcoming tour dates would be canceled.

Tributes

Aimless Inc.’s tribute, issued Saturday, continues:

“He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens. He got up every morning and started writing, always working towards finding his place among the songwriting giants that sat on his record shelves, those same giants who let him into their lives and took him under their wings, who he studied relentlessly. Guy Clark, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker.

“How do we move forward without the one who gave us countless 90 minute distractions from our impending doom? The one who always had 18 minutes to share a story. We’ll do it by carrying his stories and songs that contain messages of love, compassion, and peace with us. Today, put on one of your favorite Todd Snider records and ‘play it loud enough to wake up all of your neighbors or at least loud enough to always wake yourself up.’ We love you Todd, sail on old friend, we’ll see you again out there on the road somewhere down the line. You will always be a force of nature.”

Rolling Stone magazine remembered Snider as “a singer, songwriter, and raconteur who helped shape the alt-country and Americana music movements.”

A fan, responding to the death announcement on Snider’s Facebook page, wrote the following:

“Todd never considered himself equal of his hero’s John Prine, Kris, Guy or Jerry Jeff but he was. Now I’m overwhelmed with sadness that the last has passed and the joy that he joined the heavenly band. God bless you Todd, the pain and suffering is over. RIP.”

Aimless Inc. also shared some lyrics from Snider’s “Force of Nature” as part of its tribute.

“Like A Force of Nature”

If we never get together again
Forgive me for these fools I’ve been
See if you can remember me when
I was listening to my better angels

It’s like a force of nature
Coming over me
I can’t keep myself from moving
It’s like a force of nature

May your hope always outweigh your doubt
Until this old world finally punches you out
May you always play your music
Loud enough to wake up all of your neighbors
Or may you play at least loud enough
To always wake yourself up
