MAPLETON, Utah, May 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A Maple Mountain High School senior has died following a Monday evening crash in that city.
The victim was Kathrynn Shaw, 18, of Spanish Fork.
A news release from Mapleton City Police Chief John Jackson said that just after 7:30 p.m., officers responded to an injury accident at 1600 North and Main Street.
The news release said the accident happened when a 17-year-old boy driving a Mazda passenger car west on 1600 North failed to stop at the stop sign, and hit the victim’s Hyundai SUV, which was traveling south on Main Street.
The impact caused the SUV to roll, ejecting Shaw. She was transported to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, and succumbed to her injuries during the night.
The Mazda also had two male juvenile passengers, and the SUV had two other adult females. All others involved in the accident were either treated on scene or were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.
Shaw was set to graduate with her class this week. Nebo School District and Maple Mountain High School, which is in Spanish Fork and serves that city and Mapleton, are working with counselors to help students deal with the incident.
The Mapleton Police Department is still investigating the circumstances of the accident and has not yet screened the case for potential charges.
