GRAND COUNT, Utah, May 23, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A four-legged recruit from Poland has joined the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
The new staffer is Echo, an 11-month-old Belgian Malinois from more than 5,000 miles away. Echo has been paired with Sgt. Turk as a handler.
“Through a highly competitive grant process, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $25,000 to purchase a dual purpose canine and the specialized equipment needed to operate a successful K-9 program,” a GCSO social media post says.
“This grant funding was made possible largely because of the success our office has had over the past three years in seizing large quantities of narcotics and our continued commitment to combating drug trafficking in Grand County. We often rely on grants such as this to help purchase necessary equipment while helping offset the burden on our county budget.
“K-9 Echo will be a tremendous asset to our agency and community as we continue working to keep dangerous drugs out of our county and protect the citizens we serve. Please join us in welcoming K-9 Echo to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office family!”
